Nippers is back on following last week’s washout, this Sunday 22^nd Jamuary for a 10am start. The BBQ roster kicks in: check to see if you’re on duty.

And then the following week we will be running the BBQ for the Junior Carnival at Corrimal on Sunday 29^th January. Col Moodie and his team led by the indefatigable Chris Chapman did such a great job at the Boaties Carnival in December, there’s no doubt we can do an equally efficient, friendly and profitable job this time.

What made it work then, and what we need now, is volunteers. Yes, you at the back, and you sidling off to the left there … look, it really is a lot of fun serving up sandwiches in the busy bits and chatting in the not-so-busy bits.

I can say that because I did it before, and I’m going to do it again. So should you. So, as Col puts it:

If you are not already flat out helping with the carnival in other ways, it would be great if you could help out on the BBQ. I am looking for help:

• 7am to 9am
• 9am to 11am
• 11am to 1pm
• 1pm to 3pm
• 3pm to 4pm cleanup

Daniel has also qualified [...]]]> All of us at Corrimal Juniors  are very proud we have two boys who have been selected to represent the Illawarra at the Surf Life Saving NSW 2011 Interbranch Championships at Redhead Beach on 10-11 December:

• U14 – Mani Meredith
• U15 – Daniel St George

This a big achievement for both boys: well done!

Daniel has also qualified for the U14 5km Open Water Swim for State on the 3.12.11 to be held at the Regatta Centre in Penrith, and also has qualified for the Australian Open Water U14 5km swim in Feb 2012 in Perth. Good on you, Digger, we’re all proud of you, although none more than your Mum and Dad.

As it happens there is a Sydney Water Carnival event on the same day, and many of our usual organizers and helpers will be at another beach, so I have put my hand up to organize the boaties BBQ.

Now, what I need is volunteers from the juniors to help out on the BBQ on Saturday 3rd December.

I will need 4 or more people on the BBQ at any one time – maybe more at the busy lunch time & end of competition time – probably around 4pm.

Start will be around 6:30 or 7am and the finish will be when we run out of supplies or buyers – about 5pm, I think.

As venues for carnivals etc are confirmed, the booklet will be updated during the course of the season.

In a club like ours, there [...]]]> Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday (Sat 2nd April) at Woonona-Bulli RSL in the Auditorium. Start time is 1.00pm.

We want you to be there. Specifically, we want you to step up and take on one of the various jobs that keep the junior surf club running. In a club like ours, there is always turnover of people running things. It stands to reason: children grow up, move on to senior surf life saving or other activities, and parents move on with them.

There are two main areas in which we’d like your active participation.

We need people to join the Committee to help us do the backroom work that ensures our kids get the surf education they need. The Committee meets monthly for about an hour. It’s a great opportunity to get involved in a vibrant community-based organisation, understand what happens behind the scenes at a junior surf club and make some lasting friendships.

Otherwise, maybe you could be an Age Manager, take charge of a group and lead them through the parts of a Nippers session. It’s really a small step from providing on-the-spot help as you do now. The club provides resources so you know what you’re doing and, again, it’s a great atmosphere in which to do something constructive and build some great friendships.

The AGM starts at 1.00pm. It would be great to see you there to support the club, then stick around for:

The Presentation

Presentation Day will be held at the same venue immediately following the AGM, commencing at 2.00pm.

This is an afternoon in which we acknowledge the achievements of our Nippers druing the summer season, both competition-oriented but also personal.  We enjoy watching our kids blossom into responsible young people, in and out of the water. This is our chance to pat them on the back and let them know we’ve seen the efforts they’ve made.

It’s also a chance to recognise the input of the managers, leaders, coaches, parent helpers and club officials. Come and join us and give yourself the pat on the back you deserve, too.

There will be a meeting of Age Managers and Club Officials on Sunday 6th March at the clubhouse to discuss this year’s awards.

Age Managers are asked to please come prepared with nominations. The awards for consideration are:

Encouragement Awards: 1 male & 1 female from each age group
Sportsperson of the Year
Most Improved Juvenile
Most Consistent Performer
Most Outstanding Performer
Encouragement Award
Team of the Year
Jim McRae Award – awarded to person/s for encouraging participation and sportsmanship
Volunteer of the Year Award
The Branch Achievers Award – Male & Female – will be decided based on branch carnival results – discussion to be held at meeting
The “Alan Florence Shield” for Club person of the Year is the Chairperson’s choice and the winner is not disclosed until presentation day (Craig to provide name in sealed envelope). Voting can be done anonymously and Sharon will have voting slips on hand.

If you need a list of names for your age group, please let Sharon know. It is also advisable to have “back up” choices in case one of your nominees is getting another award (e.g. point score or club champs, or one of the perpetual trophies).
